Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Cycle A – 31st August to 6th September 2008

Today’s readings show different ways of loving God. Jeremiah is almost grudging. His words today seem more like a moan than a declaration of love and he suffered greatly because of the unpopular prophecies he spoke.
Paul’s letter warns the Romans to change their ways and live according to their new faith by turning away from the ways of the world. This call to change is fundamental in really living God’s love.
And Christ takes this one stage further in today’s Gospel. His self-giving is total in offering his body on the cross for us, and he goes into this terrible fate with open eyes, preventing his friends from stopping him. This has implications for his followers. He makes clear that it is only by complete self-giving, even if that includes accepting a great deal of suffering, that we will eventually gain life in God. We may feel like we have to give up everything for God, but paradoxically we will actually gain everything.
