Cycle A – 9th March to 15th March 2008
You will notice as we enter the final days of Lent and approach Easter that much of the religious imagery in church has been veiled. The custom of veiling crosses and images during the final stages of Lent is an ancient one, but has changed over the centuries.
In the 11th century a cloth, called the ‘hunger cloth,’ was suspended in front of the altar, beginning on the Fifth Sunday of Lent. At the beginning of Lent, public sinners were excluded from church so the ‘hunger cloth’ may have been an acknowledgment that we all are sinners, and are partaking in a ‘fast of the eyes.’ By the end of the 13th century, all statues, crosses and pictures were veiled, and this is the practice we continue today.
Opportunities for our much-loved personal devotions are also denied to us at this time. This is so that our hearts and minds will become more focused on the Easter Triduum; on the agony that Christ endured for us in Gethsemene, and on the victory He won for us on Calvary. In this way, we can be certain that we are still joined with the saints we venerate, as they too dwell in eternity with their eyes fixed on God.
