The Ascension of the Lord

Cycle A – 4th to 10th May 2008

Communications Sunday Prayer

O God, whose word is truth
and in whose light we see light,
guide those who tell the story of our times
through word and image.
Make them seekers after truth
and advocates of human dignity.
Grant discernment to all who rely on their labours,
and, as we confront the pain and promise of this world,
awaken in us a sense of wonder at your presence
and of longing for your peace.

The Catholic Communications Network provides support for the bishops of England and Wales in promoting the gospel in the media. There will be a second collection to support its work. The CCN depends on your generosity.

Lectio Divina: Listen with the Ear of Your Heart
Lectio Divina (meaning "holy reading" or "meditative reading") is an ancient method of prayer that allows us to draw closer to God through the slow and prayerful reading of Scripture. Look out for a leaflet with this newsletter that tells you more about it and how to do it. The house groups here at St Marie's do Lectio Divina together. For details about the house groups, pick up a form at the back of the cathedral or contact Gerard Stephens (01709 720156) and look out for more info’ over the coming weeks.

Sacred Art of Living and Dying - Monday 9th June
How can you best support a dying friend or relative when your own world has been turned upside down? When someone is struggling with emotional and spiritual pain, what kinds of tools might help? How can we prepare throughout our lifetime for our dying? Acclaimed author and teacher Richard Groves is at Whirlow Grange Christian Spirituality Centre for one day from 9.30 am - 4.00 pm to present an introductory programme to look at the relationship between suffering, grief, meaning, forgiveness and hope. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children
The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Bill will be debated by Members of Parliament imminently. It is designed to increase experiments on vulnerable human embryos. It will also extend experiments such as making cloned embryos and animal-human hybrids. In addition, a child's need for a father will not be recognised for test-tube babies under this bill. Within the same bill, pro-abortion MPs want to widen the law on abortion. Please phone your MP at the House of Commons on 020 7219 3000 to ask him/her to vote against this bill. For a detailed briefing "Lobbying your MP on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill" contact SPUC on 020 7091 7091 or email lizfoody@spuc.org,uk
